Diagnosis - Medical History
Dr. Michael will take your complete medical history and he will specifically ask:
What kinds of symptoms do you have?
What makes them better or worse?
Where or when do they appear? At home? At work?
Have you noticed a seasonal pattern to your symptoms?
Do the symptoms occur right after you have had contact with a suspected allergen?
Do other family members have allergies?
Do you ever wheeze or do you have a chronic cough?
Diagnosis - Physical Examination
Dr. Michael will examine the patient and look for certain signs:
Is the lining of your nose inflamed or swollen?
Do you have dryness of skin, hives or skin rashes?
Are there dark circles under your eyes (allergic shiners)?
Do you have eye redness and / or discharge?
Do you have fluid in the ears?
Do you have inflamed throat, post nasal drip or sinus drainage?
Do you have swollen lymph nodes?
Do you have any wheezing in the lungs or shortness of breath?
Diagnosis - Allergy Skin Testing
Although not everyone requires it, a skin test may help identify the specific allergens that are causing the allergic reactions. They are usually done on the back. The small amount of the specific allergen is placed on the skin, which is gently scratched with a sterile disposable needle. If the area swells or becomes red and itchy within fifteen to twenty minutes, you may be allergic to those specific substances.
Some patients would require a second skin test called Intradermal, which is like the first test except for the fact that it is done using a very small intradermal disposable needle. The whole procedure is tolerated very well by children and adults. We always explain our plans and procedures with our patients and / or their family members in advance.
